Cala Gonone

Cala Gonone, is a small village overlooking the great Gulf of Orosei, with an extraordinary mostly uncontaminated, wild and jagged coast. The area is rich in vegetation and breathtaking scenery, the perfect place for nature, and recreational activities, and sports lovers.

Sea lovers, interested in the underwater world, can engage in SEA-WATCHING or SNORKELING to observe and photograph the secret lives of the sea flora and fauna of our coasts, or SCUBA diving on walls, dry banks of rock. The most experienced divers will have the chance to dive to two World War II wrecks – the famous German armed frigate KT 12 and the Italian merchant Nasello.

250 meters far from La Bouganville residence, the Argonauta offers any level diving courses, and organizes daily excursions to discover the most interesting dives of the Orosei gulf.

Those who simply wish to rest, and enjoy swimming or sea bathing has the chance to choose beaches of different kinds (sandy, stony or pebble ones) everyday. Besides Palmasera beach, you can easily reach three other beaches (just a short drive away, 2-3 kilometers from the center of Cala Gonone): Sos Dorroles , S'Abba Meica, Ziu Martine and Cala Fuili with remarkable natural characteristics and emerald water.

About 8 km far you will find the beaches of Cartoe and Osalla, with their fine sand and uncontaminated environment. In high season both beaches have a bar, and lifeguards service.

Excursions

Sea excursions are countless, and you can choose those offered with a driver by dinghy/rubber boat, big boat, fishing-tourism boat, or you can rent a watercraft and go on your own; from the port of Cala Gonone - 600 meters far from the residence - the boats leave every hour to the beach of Cala Luna (which became famous for some scenes of Lina Wertmuller’s film "Overwhelmed by an Unusual Destiny in the August sea", shot there). We recommend to take a whole day trip, with packed lunch, or stop in the small restaurant hidden behind the little lake, in front of the beach. And, during your holiday, you shouldn’t miss a day excursion along the coast, which will give you the chance to admire the steep limestone coast with ravines, caves, and well-known beaches such as: “Cala Sisine, “Cala Biriola, “Cala Mariolu, “Cala dei gabbiani, “Le Sorgenti andCala Goloritzé. You will be facinated by the seabed, just a few meters from the beach, you will be able to observe a lot of marine flora and fauna, simply with mask and snorkel (snorkeling).

Sports

Trekking is a classic sport particularly appreciated by German and North European customers, especially recommended in medium and low season; you can safely follow different paths, solo, for the most experienced, or with the professional support of one of the many local guides: Gorroppu Gorges, and the nuragic site Tiscali, are well-known. We warmly recommend these above mentioned excursions, since nature and the landscapes are beautiful and easy for those with children too. A well-trod path is the one from Cala Fuili (reached through a paved road, and a panoramic natural stone stairway), to Cala Luna: if you prefer you can also take the trip back by sea, reaching the port of Cala Gonone, by one of the many boats carring out tourist service in the Gulf.

The area is also very famous for the countless CLIMBING possibilities: about 610 routes on 21 cliffs just around Cala Gonone, for example, including “The Armchair”, the walls above Cala Fuili, the Doves Caves; for the most trained "Aguglia" of Cala Goloritzé. Contacting the local guides it is possible to visit many CAVES, with their pleasant climate, around the area. Assisted by “Dorgali city GUIDES”, for example, you can visit the part open to the public, of the famous “Bue Marino Caves” and the hypogean complex “Ispinigoli”. Easy and satisfying CANOE and KAJAK trips, hired along the coast or by the nearby lake “Cedrino”; MOUNTAIN BIKE rental shops are present; seasonally, experienced instructors organize tandem PARAGLIDING.

Archeology and culture

The area of Cala Gonone, and Dorgali is dotted with different ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES of the mysterious nuragica civilization such as: Serra Orrios, and Nuraghe Mannu, or “The Giants Tomb S'Ena and Thomes”. Date back to the Pre-Nuragic period, we have Domus de Janas (the fairy houses), and fourteen Dolmen, six of them still in excellent condition, as the ones of Motorra and Monte Longu. During this holiday, it will be impossible to get bored! In nights with clear sky, it is possible to admire a wonderful STARRY SKY, if possible and you have one bring a pair of binoculars or a little telescope with you, to admire star clusters, nebulae, constellations, and planets. At night, the sky is incredible wonderful here.

How to get there

From Olbia – travel time about one hour and half – once left the harbor or the airport, you have head direction CAGLIARI - NUORO, taking the state highway 131 (major highway which connects you to all main airports and ports in the island, it is similar to a motorway, but it is free, in Sardinia we do not have motorways). Take the EXIT LULA-DORGALI (it is very important not to miss this exit otherwise you will have no chance to go back before reaching Nuoro), continue for 20 km direction Dorgali (8 km far from Cala Gonone). Once you'll be arrived in Dorgali, at the exit of the little town, and after less than 2 kilometers (you are on the road 125), turn to your left, and go through the tunnel leading to Cala Gonone. Simply follow the very panoramic road, running down for about 7 km with several hairpin turns. After passing a roundabout at the entrance of the village, you will see a petrol station on the right, at the end of the straight line, turn left and follow the street sign CARTOE AND OSALLA BEACHES. After 200 meters you will arrive at the street Via dei Lecci 10, and at the residence La Bouganville.

As an alternative, from Olbia you can reach Dorgali also following the S.S. 125 a panoramic coastal and two-lane road, running through several villages along the Tyrrhenian coast. Travel time is over two hours. If you are arriving from Cagliari or Alghero take the S.S. 131 road and take the exit to DORGALI-LULA and following the direction for Dorgali village.
